Normalize "Its not okay.."

It is important to explicitly state that certain behaviors are not okay in the workplace for anyone, regardless of gender, to establish a clear and inclusive organizational culture. This applies to both men and women.

 Why?

  1. Promotes a Safe and Inclusive Environment:

    • Clearly stating that certain behaviors are not acceptable fosters a safe and inclusive workplace for everyone. This includes creating an environment where all employees feel respected, valued, and free from harassment or discrimination.
  2. Sets Expectations:

    • Clearly communicated policies and guidelines set expectations for behavior in the workplace. This helps employees understand what is considered acceptable and unacceptable conduct, promoting a professional atmosphere.
  3. Prevents Harassment and Discrimination:

    • Explicitly stating that certain behaviors are not okay helps prevent and address instances of harassment and discrimination. This is crucial for creating a workplace where individuals are treated with dignity and respect.
  4. Compliance with Legal and Ethical Standards:

    • Establishing and communicating clear expectations aligns with legal and ethical standards. Many jurisdictions have laws and regulations that require organizations to maintain a workplace free from discrimination and harassment.
  5. Cultivates a Positive Organizational Culture:

    • A workplace that actively promotes respect and inclusivity contributes to a positive organizational culture. This, in turn, can enhance employee morale, engagement, and overall job satisfaction.
  6. Encourages Reporting of Unacceptable Behavior:

    • When employees know that certain behaviors are not acceptable, they are more likely to report incidents of misconduct. This reporting mechanism is crucial for addressing issues promptly and ensuring a healthy work environment.
  7. Supports Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives:

    • Promoting a workplace where certain behaviors are not tolerated aligns with broader diversity and inclusion initiatives. It sends a message that the organization values diversity and is committed to creating an environment where everyone can thrive.
  8. Builds Trust:

    • Clearly communicating expectations and enforcing policies builds trust among employees. When individuals know that inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated, they are more likely to trust the organization's commitment to their well-being.
  9. Protects the Organization:

    • Having clear policies and stating that certain behaviors are not acceptable helps protect the organization legally. It demonstrates that the company takes its responsibility seriously and is proactive in preventing workplace misconduct.
  10. Provides a Basis for Enforcement:

    • Clear communication of unacceptable behavior provides a basis for enforcing consequences when necessary. This helps maintain a fair and consistent approach to addressing inappropriate conduct.

In fact all of the above stated establishes a foundation for a healthy organizational culture and helps prevent issues related to harassment and discrimination.

Now let me ask you when was the last time you said a "thank you" or a "sorry" to a co-worker or took accountability of whatsoever scenarios which presents itself in your workplace.

Here is a transcript of a conversation which happened recently between me ( a woman) and a senior manager ( a man) in my organization.

<*After greetings*>

SM: Did you check further on those <*jargon stuff*> Jira with the PM ?

D: Yes I did and I am still waiting to get a reply from the team.

SM :  I am sorry that it is getting delayed for no explicit reason of ours.

D : Yes, it is really unfortunate that it is being delayed. I will ping in person once and let you know.

SM : Yes, please go ahead and reach out to them.

D :  Sure, will let you know sooner.

SM :  Thanks

D :  👍

Isn't it an obvious fact that incorporating apology and gratitude into the workplace is not just about individual actions; it contributes to the overall organizational culture. By fostering a culture of humility, accountability, and appreciation, companies can create a more resilient and positive work environment and if you really want to extend it further, not just companies.. but any work place..

Doesn't it look like there is only one synonym which should go hand in hand with behavior and  that should be acceptable.

Behavior : Acceptable

  1. Professionalism: Maintain a professional demeanor at all times. This includes being punctual, dressing appropriately, and adhering to company policies.

  2. Respect: Treat colleagues, superiors, and subordinates with respect and courtesy. Listen actively, value diverse opinions, and avoid discriminatory or disrespectful language.

  3. Communication: Communicate effectively and professionally. Clearly express your thoughts and ideas, and listen actively to others. Use appropriate channels for communication, such as meetings, emails, or collaboration tools.

  4. Teamwork: Collaborate well with others and contribute positively to team dynamics. Be open to feedback and willing to work towards common goals.

  5. Conflict Resolution: Handle conflicts in a constructive manner. Seek resolution through communication and mediation rather than resorting to gossip or confrontation.

  6. Ethics: Adhere to ethical standards and company policies. Avoid engaging in any behavior that could be considered unethical or compromising.

  7. Work-Life Balance: Respect the boundaries between work and personal life. Avoid excessive gossip, and be mindful of how personal matters may impact the work environment.

Now, what could be the antonym ?

     Behavior : Non Acceptable

    1. Harassment: Any form of harassment, including sexual harassment, is unacceptable. This includes unwanted advances, comments, or any behavior that creates a hostile work environment.

    2. Discrimination: Discrimination based on gender, race, age, or any other protected characteristic is not tolerated. All individuals should be treated fairly and without bias.

    3. Bullying: Any form of bullying or intimidation is not acceptable. This includes verbal, physical, or emotional abuse.

    4. Dishonesty: Lying, deceit, or any form of dishonest behavior undermines trust and is not acceptable in a professional setting.

    5. Sabotage: Intentionally undermining the work of colleagues or the company is unacceptable.

    6.  Disrespect: You know what and why it is unacceptable.

In short, creating a positive and inclusive work environment is essential for both men and women. Acceptable behavior revolves around professionalism, respect, effective communication, teamwork, and ethical conduct. Harassment, discrimination, bullying, dishonesty, and insubordination are universally unacceptable and can undermine the overall health of the workplace. By fostering a culture of equality, mutual respect, and adherence to ethical standards, organizations can ensure a conducive and productive environment where all employees, regardless of gender, can thrive and contribute to their fullest potential. It is crucial for individuals to be aware of and adhere to their company's specific policies while also promoting a culture that values diversity and professionalism.
